Foot pain can often be debilitating and excruciating.

Although your feet get you where you want to go each and every day, you may not think much about them until they cause you pain. Once that happens, you want relief. However there are many different problems that can lead to foot pain, and it can sometimes be difficult to identify the source of the pain. An injury, any condition which causes inflammation in the bones, tendons or ligaments in the foot, or overuse can all lead to foot pain. Other causes of foot pain can include arthritis, as well as diabetic peripheral neuropathy.

Some of the more common reasons you may be experiencing foot pain include:

Causes, Symptoms and Diagnosis of Foot Pain

Wearing improper footwear is a primary cause of foot pain, however infectious diseases, bacteria, fungi, viruses, injuries, overuse, diseases and biomechanical conditions can also cause foot pain. Wearing too-tight shoes, or shoes with high heels can cause pain in the forefoot and shoes that fit poorly can cause blisters, bruising and pain. Standing or walking on hard surfaces such as cement can result in plantar fasciitis pain, and any strain, sprain, bruise or fracture can also lead to moderate to severe foot pain.

Achilles tendonitis can lead to pain at the back of the heel, while plantar fasciitis can cause excruciating heel pain. Specific, localized pain and tenderness on the ball of the foot can be caused by a “stone bruise,” and a common athletic injury which causes pain in the big toe is known as “turf toe.” Diagnosing foot pain is done largely by taking a detailed patient history, although x-rays and CT scans could be used to ensure there is no fracture present.
