While most back pain improves with home treatment, some back pain may need additional pain treatments to allow you to continue your day-to-day life.
Back pain tends to affect men and women equally, with the majority of initial episodes of back pain affecting those between the ages of 20 and 40. Depending on the cause of your back pain, you may have limited range of motion, or the area may be inflamed and tender to the touch. While most types of back pain are relatively benign, if you experience weakness, numbness or tingling, fever, problems with bladder or bowel control, or unexplained weight loss, see your physician immediately.
Osteoarthritis, muscle strain, vertebral fractures and mechanical problems, such as a herniated disc, as well as back injuries from an accident, a fall, or a sport are the most likely causes of back pain. More serious—yet relatively rare—causes of back pain include damage to nervous tissues, infection, vascular problems and cancer.
Treatments Used for Back Pain
Although the majority of back pain will improve with time and home treatments such as NSAID OTC medications, if your back pain persists, you may need to consider stronger treatments.
At Seattle Pain, we want to help you avoid surgery whenever possible, and will do so by combining traditional and non-traditional treatments to help you get back to your regular activities. The pain treatments we use for back pain at Seattle Pain include the following:
- Muscle relaxants may be helpful for your back pain, however for some, they can cause dizziness and sleepiness;
- Topical pain relievers, some of which contain menthol or capsaicin, rubbed into the site of the pain;
- Narcotic drugs for more severe or resistant back pain, to use for a short period of time under doctor supervision;
- Cortisone injections can help decrease the inflammation surrounding the root of the nerves
- Nerve blocks
