While most back pain improves with home treatment, some back pain may need additional pain treatments to allow you to continue your day-to-day life.

Back pain tends to affect men and women equally, with the majority of initial episodes of back pain affecting those between the ages of 20 and 40. Depending on the cause of your back pain, you may have limited range of motion, or the area may be inflamed and tender to the touch. While most types of back pain are relatively benign, if you experience weakness, numbness or tingling, fever, problems with bladder or bowel control, or unexplained weight loss, see your physician immediately.

Osteoarthritis, muscle strain, vertebral fractures and mechanical problems, such as a herniated disc, as well as back injuries from an accident, a fall, or a sport are the most likely causes of back pain. More serious—yet relatively rare—causes of back pain include damage to nervous tissues, infection, vascular problems and cancer.
